Mery Rosado, Proprietress

Like many of us “transplanted New Yorkers” who purchased “week-end homes” in the area, little did Mery Rosado realize that the house she purchased in Woodstock in 1992, would end up being her “full-time” home just twelve years later!

After a 20-year career as Vice President in Corporate Bond Sales with a major Wall Street firm ended in an early retirement…… she happily settled into her spacious Woodstock home. By the way, Mery was the second woman and the first hispanic to ever be appointed President of the Corporate Bond Traders Club on Wall Street!

With much encouragement from this writer, Mery obtained her real estate sales license and soon began a real estate career. During the Summer of 2005 Mery noticed a Café for sale in Saugerties which she quickly sent to her “sister” who owns a well established Restaurant in Long Island and had just spoken about investing in this area. While her sister passed on the idea………. There was something about the “little café” that appealed to Mery. She became the listing agent in October of 2005 and eventually decided to purchase it herself and closed the sale in April of 2006.

“Hija de bodeguera” (Spanish for “daughter of a grocer“).or “there are no coincidences”.

Mery was born in Manhattan and raised in The Bronx. Her father, who owned several grocery stores and “mini-marts” was instrumental as one of the founding members of one of the largest financial business associations similar to today’s “Credit Union”. Low interest loans and financial assistance was provided for other grocery store owners. Most of her “after school” experiences along with her brother, was to help out at one of the stores. Her father eventually decided to sell everything and invested in real estate in Puerto Rico, including “Miss Vicky’s” a small restaurant which featured music, and of course domino tables. Sadly, her father, “Don Marcial” passed away this Summer after a long illness, but “Miss Vicky’s” still exists.

“If someone were to ask me what Café Mezzaluna is about, we are an eclectic combination of Hispanic and American cultures where food has no boundaries. This is evident from the fluffy pancakes to “Huevos Flamenco” served up at Sunday Brunch. Or the very popular “Cubano” sandwich…… to their specialty Pizza.

When Mery decided to enter into this new venture, she found Luis Pacheco who had been a cook with “El Coqui” Restaurant in Kingston for eight years. She quickly hired him and together, they have collaborated on expanding the menu through many “family recipes” which Mery has collected over the years!

A short while later, a friend, Cheri Lee was in the process of closing her Crystal and Gems shop in Woodstock and mentioned that she had once managed a Pizza restaurant and loved making pizza! Another collaboration which not only accounts for great pizza, traditional and unique “Latino” tastes and also Essential oils and Crystals which are available to the public.

Mery’s early love for the Arts is evident having been graduated from “High School of Art and Design” in NYC. She has featured many local as well as Internationally acclaimed, Puerto Rican artists. Stay tuned……. As Mery has also created an Art Gallery off Route 28 which is scheduled to open some time in the near future!

Her love of music is also present (having once been with a “cover band” which performed extensively) in the local music groups which are featured at Sunday Brunch and special “music evenings”.

When asked, “what or who inspires you?” Mery replied, “my son, Ray, is my biggest inspiration and my best friend. We speak several times a day on the phone. He holds a Masters Degree in “Interactive Technology” and is currently in a second “Masters Degree” progam in Real Estate Development. He lives in Denver with Wife, Kristen and their two, beautiful daughters, Isabelle almost 3 and Amelia, 10 months old.
