Public art show has plenty of horse sense By Ariel Zangla, Freeman staff 10/24/2008 SAUGERTIES - Sponsors are being sought for a new public art event that will bring fiberglass carousel horses to Saugerties next summer. Called "Hors'n Around Saugerties, A Summer Long Celebration," the event is being offered by the Saugerties Area Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the town and village of Saugerties Economic Development Committee. Modeled after similar events in Catskill and Hudson, which showcased fiberglass cats and dogs, respectively, the Saugerties event will line local streets with up to 50 painted fiberglass carousel horses, according to a press release. The release said the horses will be decorated in themes related to the spirit of the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial celebration that is taking place next summer. The Saugerties Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking sponsors for individual horses. Sponsorship for one horse costs $550, which pays for the fiberglass equine, shipping, artist supplies and a clear coating to preserve the decoration. Sponsors may be individuals or businesses. More than one business or individual may share in the sponsorship of a horse. A minimum of 25 sponsors are needed. Once the sponsors have committed to the project, artists will be asked to submit design proposals for the horses. Artist proposals will be revealed at a kick-off exhibit and reception at which sponsors will choose the design they wish to have on their horses. The sponsorship deadline for "Hors'n Around Saugerties" is Nov. 1. Interested individuals or businesses should contact the town and village Economic Development Office at (845) 246-2800 ext. 371 or EDC@saugerties.ny.us. Sponsorship is not limited to Saugerties-based individuals or businesses. |
