Exploring contemporary themes through the ancient traditions of mask and puppet theater. Puppet figures, mask characters and performing objects of all sizes and description will take center stage when Arm-of-the-Sea Theater and friends present their fifth annual Esopus Creek Festival of Mask and Puppet Theater in Saugerties, NY. The festival is a celebration of puppetry's ancient roots and its emergence as a contemporary performance art form. It features original shows by Arm-of-the-Sea Theater and other theater artists of the region. Arm-of-the-Sea Theater is a not-for-profit organization based in Saugerties, NY, in the beautiful Hudson River Valley. For over twenty years Arm-of-the-Sea has been developing a style of magical realism that marries the mythic and the everyday, humanity and the earth, visual arts and natural science, poetry and politics.
Our large-scale productions incorporate ancient theatrical devices for shared enchantment and visual storytelling. With music, gesture and stunning visuals, they illuminate the links between human communities and the life-support processes of this living planet.
