And to "preview" the lighthouses, before coming to Saugerties to see them in person, go to the table below and click on any of the lighthouse title links. The Saugerties Area Chamber of Commerce and Saugerties Town/Village Economic Development Committee are delighted to present "Shine On Saugerties 2011" - an outdoor public art event featuring handmade wooden lighthouses. The lighthouse design is based on the famed Saugerties Lighthouse, the oldest (1869) continuously operating lighthouse on the Hudson River, which sits at the mouth of the Esopus Creek in Saugerties. The major sponsors of "Shine On Saugerties" are: - Stewart's Shops of Saratoga, who, for the third year in a row have been major sponsors of our outdoor art events. This year, they contributed $1,500 - a "Shining Light" level sponsorhip
- Markertek/Tower Products of Saugerties, also a major contributer for the second time, with $1,500, also a "Shining Light" level sponsorship
- PrecisionFlow Technologies of Saugerties, a major contributer for the third time, this year with an $850, "Lighthouse Keeper" level sponsorship.
And thanks, too to special sponsors the Town and Village of Saugerties, Fehr Brothers Inc and Naccarato Insurance.
Working with local members of the artist community and woodworker Marcus (Skip) Arthur, the organizers are excited that this year's public art is unique, locally produced, and a great way to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Saugerties' incorporation in 1811. The Lighthouses, which feature an operating solar light, are now on display along the streets of the Historic Village Business District, now through late September. Not only are the models designed by a Saugerties artisan, the lumber is milled and harvested locally, by Native Lumber in Saugerties. The "Shine on Saugerties" Gala and Auction will be held Saturday, October 8th at the Kiersted House (119 Main Street). The lighthouses will be auctioned off and the proceeds will benefit the participating artists, participating/selected charities or not-for-profits and the Chamber. The Saugerties Lighthouse is a working lighthouse, but is also a bed and breakfast which has been featured, among other places, in the New York Times. The Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy maintains the Lighthouse and its half-mile long nature trail, which is open to the public.
The wooden lighthouse replicas, designed and handmade by Skip Arthur, feature a streamlined version of the Lighthouse which echoes the shape of the actual structure, while leaving details to be furnished by each artist. Arthur created "a blank canvas" as shown below, where the artists' imaginations were the only limit to design possibilities.

Sponsors and artists have been matched up and the artists have now completed their works of art, turning the above canvas into some really beautiful works of art. Here is the list of participating artists, the title of their works and each artist's sponsor. Each of the titles of the lighthouses are links. If you click on them, you can see a high resolution photo of the lighthouse work of art. The GIF column lists images that have a white background and that show the opposite side of the artwork, that the "Title" column shows. (Note that for the GIFs, the links work with Mozilla Firefox and Chrome and other browsers, but Internet Explorer seems to have issues with the links.) Special thanks to Skip Arthur, who undertook a yeoman's effort in building the lighthouses. Thanks to the Village of Saugerties Department of Public Works for their great work in installing the lighthouses. And a special thanks to Native Lumber Co., Saugerties Lumber (lighthouse wood), Rothe Welding (lighthouse stands) and Kurt Boyer (plaques) for their help on this project.
